KABALE: The President of the Uganda People Congress Party (UPC), and a son to the former president of Uganda Hon. Jimmy Akena, has expressed his interests to contest for presidency in the upcoming 2026 general elections.
Hon. Jimmy Akena, also a Uganda’s Member of Parliament representing Lira Municipality made the confirmation over the weekend during a consultative meeting in Kabale District.
Carrying Portraits, Singing the Party anthem, Supporters of the Uganda People’s Congress passionately welcomed the Party President in the district and led him to opening the Kigezi Regional UPC Party office in Kabale Town.
The Party President Hon. Jimmy Akena was accompanied by the party secretary general Hon. Fred Ebil, the Party Principal Public Relations officer Hon. Micheal Orach, the Dokolo Woman MP Sarah Aguti, and the Hon. Ayam North MP Hon. Apio Otuko.
Addressing district party leaders of Kabale, Rukiga and Rubanda and the supporters in Kabale Municipality Hon. Akena echoed concerns over the state of service delivery in Uganda, particularly in areas of healthcare education and infrastructure.
He expressed his disappointment in the current government for failing to provide essential medical supplies to healthcare facilities, highlighting a need for substantial improvements.
“If you take a look at the famous Kigezi College Butobere, a school which was very well stationed and established, that has now turned into a shadow of its past glory. The roof and the iron sheets there are in a sorry state. We are back to revive our Party in preparation for a full participation in the 2026 election” said Jimmy Akena.
Jimmy Akena added that there have been challenges and attacks on the leaders of the party over the years which has greatly affected the levels of support and mobilization thus encouraging the party members to stand up, reorganize and regain the support.
The Kigezi Uganda People Congress Party (UPC) coordinator, Ms Annet Kyomuhangi said the office will facilitate Grassroot mobilization and party strengthening.
Uganda People Congress Party (UPC) was founded in 1960 by the late Milton Obote, who led the country to independence alongside UPC Member of Parliament A.G. Mehta.
Obote served two presidential terms under the UPC party banner and died in October 2005, after he had announced his intention to step down as the president of Uganda.
